Look at the titles, this is romanticism stripped bare. Dogs, Cologne, Party, Happy Birthday, Towards You. It could be a haiku. Academic-in-exile Gerlov van Engelenhoven is back with a folio of witty Chattertonisms set to music. There is something of the campfire minstrel about van Engelenhoven’s music, in that you can’t imagine it ever being performed in daylight. Which makes this reviewer a little bit concerned. Regardless, there’s a very appealing feel of BC Camplight’s oeuvre to it. Maybe that’s because of the ever-present plodding beat, which like some mud-caked dog after a walk, refuses to be left out of proceedings. Check out the marvellous Cologne for proof. Good, emotional stuff.
